60Lonely Planet Country Guides For Adventure
What's the use in living if you can't feel alive?
So today I'm starting with the core of my hubbing and my life's greatest passion and driving force - new landscape's and horizons. Travelling is what keeps me sane along with laughs, friendship and good times. So far I have travelled through Southern Africa and the United Kingdom. The way I like doing it is going on a scouting holiday seeing all the spots along the way, picking out my favourite ones and then get back there for a few months to really soak up the atmosphere and the people. Also getting to know what things look like on ground level is always cool for future trips to that area (finding the best spots that otherwise would never be found). The adventure of it all is what keeps me going back for more.
I started travelling on my own at the age of 19 in April 2004, I had my 20kg packed in my huge backpack boarding my first ever flight, I was now heading for the United Kingdom home of the Queen. Out into the great unknown with my two year working holiday pass. Out there over the next two years I started contemplating life and all that as you do at this age. I realized, I had come half way around the world but I have not even seen my own country or continent...
I started browsing bookshops for more info about this and so I found the Lonely Planet range of books, here I was 13 000km from home reading about my own country, about what there is to do and see and so on. Obviously I knew a fair bit about it but I never saw or thought about it like this before. I bought a few of the Lonely Planet books and started reading.
It's incredible through how much effort these guys have gone to make these books. I mean they have hostels, restaurants, transport, what to see, what to do, what not to do, safety tips, what not to miss, how to get a great deal, what not to miss out on and the list goes on and on. So when I got back to Cape Town I started looking into these avenues of travel. I then made a career out of travelling. I have since been through South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. I have since taken up mountaineering, surfing, triathlon adventure racing, mountain biking, river rafting, kloofing, hiking, dirt biking, bungy jumping and I can go on and on. I have managed several adventure companies, backpackers and even did a stint on the over landing trucks and white water rafting.
So if you, like me get bored of the mundane day to day existence of the 9 to 5 then order your copy of your most desired destination that's in your budget and pack your bags, hit the unknown and see where it takes you. We live at our best when we step outside our comfort zone, so take that leap of faith into the unknown. On the right are a few country guides for great adventures, get yours today!
What are you waiting for, the rest of your life starts today.
Happy travelling, when you get to Cape Town give me a shout I'll take you to some unforgettable magical destinations off the beaten track ;)
Peace be the journey
